You would be surprised to find out that there are many people that don't realize that they don't get to decide if they are disabled or not. It is not up to the individual who was possibly hurt while on the job to just up and say "I am now disabled". There are a few steps that need to be taken to get put on disability.
To be eligible for some social programs as well as disability insurance, you must have a documented list of your doctor's diagnoses. You will also more than likely need your financial and even work history.
One thing to keep in mind is many employers do provide disability insurance to their staff members. This insurance will replace only a portion of the employee's salary in case you can't work because of an injury or even an illness. At first, short term disability will provide you with income for the initial part of your disability. This will last for a few weeks to a few months. If it is determined that long term disability is needed, it will help supplement part of your income for an extended period of time. It is probably best to contact your insurance provider to see if disability is part of your plan.
Another good resource for this is your Human Resources Representative. They will know all the information needed if you need to go on disability. Don't tray and be the expert on this stuff since it is confusing sometimes and it is different from state to state. So go to the person who is the most informed, and that is your HR Department.
So, to be sure that you are getting all the benefits coming to you, please ensure that you are following your companies procedures.
