You should be able to find a plan that has an annual maximum benefit that matched the lifetime maximum. If you don't, make sure it's sufficient to cover a years worth of catastrophic medical bills. I'd say anything less than $2,000,000 and it's not up-to-par.

Make sure you know what you are buying. Does the plan you are considering cover office visits and prescriptions before the deductible? If so, its probably not a true catastrophic plan. Does it cover accidents before the deductible? Is it compatible with a health savings account, allowing you to pay for your medical expenses pre-tax?
